The 30-Second Answer
To legally ride a rental motorbike in Thailand you need your home-country driving license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) endorsed for motorcycles, carried together, every time you ride. The only exceptions: bikes 50cc and under (home license alone is fine), and holders of an ASEAN-country license, which Thailand recognizes directly.
Why Both Documents Matter
The IDP is a translation of your home license, not a replacement. Carry only one of the two and you are technically unlicensed — which means:
- Police fine: ฿400–1,000 per stop
- Your rental insurance voids itself — every policy requires valid licensing
- In an accident, you can be held personally liable for the full damage
IDP 1949 vs 1968 — the Version Trap
IDPs come in two flavors, and Thailand's rules differ between them:
- 1949 Convention IDP: valid in Thailand for tourism, up to 90 days after entry. Commonly issued by the USA, Australia, India and others.
- 1968 Convention IDP: valid in Thailand for as long as your home license stays valid. Issued by the UK, most of the EU, Japan and others.
Check the front cover of your IDP — the convention year is printed there. Long-stay visitors on a 1949 permit are riding outside the law after day 90 even though the document still looks valid. It's the single most common licensing mistake we see at pickup.

The Motorcycle Endorsement
Your IDP must show a motorcycle endorsement for the class of bike you rent. A car-only IDP does not cover a 110cc Scoopy, whatever anyone tells you. When applying, explicitly ask the issuing automobile association to include the motorcycle class — some issue it by default, some need it requested.
Getting a Real Thai License (and When It's Worth It)
Staying more than a couple of months? A temporary Thai driving license beats an IDP:
- Valid 1–2 years, renewable, works as photo ID across Thailand
- Accepted by every insurance policy, no small print
- Doubles as discount ID at national parks (Thai price vs foreigner price)
How to get one (any Department of Land Transport branch): certificate of residence from your embassy or immigration office, passport with a valid visa or extension, a medical certificate from any clinic (฿100–200), then a short theory test and a beginner-level practical test. Budget two half-days in total.
